An excavator from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deliberately demolished a watchtower and a perimeter fence of a UN position in Marwahin, a community in southern Lebanon, reported the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil).
According to Unifil, Israeli forces have attacked Unifil positions in Lebanon on several occasions recently, resulting in injuries to UN peacekeepers and drawing criticism from the international community. These attacks have occurred against the backdrop of intense Israeli air strikes against Lebanon since September 23, amidst a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah, including a "limited" ground operation.
In response to this incident, Unifil expressed that violating a UN position and damaging its assets is a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701. Unifil reminded the IDF and all involved parties of their obligations to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property, as well as to respect the inviolability of the organization's facilities at all times.
Unifil also pointed out that the IDF has repeatedly demanded that Unifil vacate its positions along the Blue Line and has deliberately damaged UN positions. Despite the challenges, peacekeepers remain in all positions.
The situation has raised concerns as violence in the region is causing tensions and jeopardizing security and stability. Measures are expected to be taken to prevent further escalation and to uphold the principles of international law.
