Lebanese Army's Role Under UN Resolution 1701

Questions arise about the capabilities of the Lebanese army to fill the gap in the southern part of the country in the event of the introduction of resolution 1701...

Many experts and observers express concerns regarding the readiness and capabilities of the Lebanese army to take on its full responsibilities in Southern Lebanon in the event of the withdrawal of international peacekeepers working in accordance with resolution 1701. Militants, for example, 'Hezbollah', possess more advanced military equipment and have greater combat experience.

Professor of Middle Eastern studies Ali Koshaz reveals: 'The Lebanese army suffers from a lack of resources and training to compete with such well-prepared and equipped forces like 'Hezbollah'.

However, representatives of the Lebanese army insist that they are ready to fulfill their obligations regarding ensuring security and stability in southern Lebanon. Major General Joseph Aoun states: 'We are taking all measures to guarantee the safety of our citizens and maintain peace'.

Nonetheless, the question of the potential of the Lebanese army fully replacing peacekeepers at the border with Israel remains a subject of ongoing debates.
