Displaced Women in Southern Beirut Amid Heavy Bombardment

On the southern outskirts of Beirut, which are subjected to intense shelling, Jayaitha Kuruma fled with her five-month-old daughter and dozens of other women. She recounted that the government forces began bombing the area, which was inhabited by refugees from neighboring villages. "We left our home, and with us fled other women with children," said Kuruma. "There were about 50 of us there." According to the estimates of human rights organizations, as a result of attacks by government troops on the outskirts, over 200,000 people were forced to leave their homes. "We are now without shelter, few children, women are suffering," Kuruma lamented, uncovering a blanket from the face of a little girl, who had fallen asleep in her arms.
