Humanitarian agencies highlight the escalating needs and the challenge of providing safety and essentials for over a million displaced individuals.

Urgent Need for Shelters Amidst Winter in Lebanon

In Lebanon, the consequences of Israeli attacks have left hundreds of thousands of people displaced and in a state of extreme vulnerability, especially now that winter is approaching. Many of the displaced are forced to sleep in the open, whether in their cars or in improvised tents, without a clear idea of where they can find shelter.

Nour Shawaf, Humanitarian Policy Advisor for Oxfam in Lebanon, highlights the urgent need to provide support to these people who have survived the Israeli bombings and now must prepare to face the cold winter. Shawaf emphasizes that needs are rapidly increasing, with thousands still without safe shelter in Beirut and other areas of the country.

The director of the NGO Inara in Lebanon, Khadija Ezzeddine, underscores the importance of providing adequate and warm winter clothing to the displaced, as the light clothing that has been distributed so far will not be sufficient to protect them from the winter cold. Ezzeddine stresses that it is essential to ensure that these people can feel safe and protected, given that they have fled conflict areas in search of a place to shelter.

The living conditions of the displaced in Lebanon are precarious, with entire families living in cars or tents along the Beirut seaside. The lack of adequate shelters is becoming an increasing problem, as many reception places are reaching their maximum capacity and some neighbors distrust the newcomers, fearing they may become targets of new attacks.

Humanitarian organizations such as Oxfam are working arduously to provide urgent assistance to the displaced in Lebanon, but they face ever-growing challenges. Despite their efforts, the lack of safe shelters and resource scarcity are endangering the survival of thousands of people who continue to have no place to find refuge amid the harsh winter conditions in the country.
